Santa Cruz is the hub of lowland of Bolivia. The city has grown rapidly since the 1960's and its local telephone cooperative offers a service that is the pride of the country. COTAS was founded between 1958 and 1960 as the Cooperative of Automatic Telephones of Santa Cruz de la Sierra* and today operates all the services of a major telecommunications supplier. While personal mobile telephones or celulares are extremely popular, COTAS maintains a large number of streetside public telephones and many of these are now kept in large fibreglass depictions of the tropical fauna. From left to right above there is a toucan, a jaguar, a red blue and green macaw, a heron and a hyacinth macaw. These giant beasts are attractive, practical and maintain public awareness of the value of Bolivia's tropical wildlife.
*Santa Cruz or more correctly Santa Cruz de la Sierra gets its name from a small town in Extremadura, Spain. Soon to be seen in a South American Pictures mini-feature. Editor Tony Morrison
