Chile: Chiloé -  Houses on stilts -palafitos - beside a tidal creek in Castro the main town. The stilts allow for the rise and fall of the tide and in most cases this land on the margin of the town is low coast and unsanitary. The local municipal authorities permit them to remain as they are a colourful and historic part of island life.
