Brazil: Pernambuco state: Recife, the second largest city in the northeast, was founded in 1637 by the Dutch. Among many surviving colonial buildings is the old prison, which has been transformed into the Casa de Cultura. The cells have been converted into boutiques and shops, and sell all types of arts and crafts from the northeast.
