Brazil: the Rio Branco (or white river) flows some 482 miles (775kms) before joining the major northern tributary of the Amazon, the Rio Negro (or black river). The Rio Branco, laden with silt, is exceptional as most of the rivers in the region, draining from north-west Brazil have black, virtually silt-free water.
