Brazil: The Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro was for many years the world's largest football (soccer) stadium. It was built for the 1950 World Cup, the first after World War II.   In recent years the Maracanã building has deteriorated and for safety reasons is now an all-seat stadium for about 70,000 people. Renovations are expanding the seating to 100,000.
