Bolivia.    The Devil dancers of Oruro south of La Paz have a folklore dating back to about 1790 when the mines of the region were being developed.  The 'devils' may represent an older native American belief in evil spirits but in recorded terms the events surrounding the carnival are associated with the Virgin of the Socovón - the mineshaft.
