The Garifuna, also known as Black Caribs, have African slave and
Carib Indian ancestry. Originating in the Caribbean island of St
Vincent, they were deported in the late 18th century to islands
off the Honduran coast, from where they made their way to the Central
American mainland. Traditionally their date of arrival in what was
then British Honduras (Belize today) is said to be November 19,
1802, a date now celebrated as Garifuna Settlement Day. The
photo shows a Garifuna teacher and primary school pupil.
