Belize.    The Lamanai Maya site is located on the west side of the New River Lagoon and surrounded by jungle. Most visitors arrive by boat. The site is thought to have been occupied from 1500BC, and probably has the longest history of occupation of any Maya site in Central America. The principal temple, 35m high and dedicated to the rain god Chac dates from 100BC.
