ARGENTINA:   Salta is the capital of Salta Province in the northwest of the country. San Francisco Church was begun in the 18th century after the original building was destroyed by fire. The 53m tower said to be the tallest in South America was added in 1870 by the Franciscan architect Luis Giorgi. The church was declared a National Monument in 1941.
