ARGENTINA: Salta cathedral. The interior was built in 1858 to replace an earlier building destroyed by fire. The nave was designed by the Franciscan architect Luis Giorgi and the altar is in the form of a huge custodia / monstrance. The Señor y Virgen del Milagro are the most famous images of the city and according to legend were found in 1592 floating in the sea off Callao the port for Lima in Peru. They are said to protect the city from eartquakes.
