La Venta , Mexico. This was the most important centre of the Olmec civilization (ca1200 to 400 BC). La Venta is on the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico, about 20m above sea level, and is dominated by a large mound. Most of the stone sculptures found there are now in the nearby city of Villahermosa.
