La Venta , Mexico was the most important centre of the Olmec civilization (ca 1200 to 400 BC). It is about 20m above sea level on the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico, and is dominated by a large mound (background) Most of the stone sculptures found there are now in the nearby city of Villahermosa.
